Birdman

Monday 23 January 2017, Wgtn's Waterfront, 11am-5pm

General Information

Birdman Wellington has been going from strength to strength since starting only a few years ago, as Wellingtonians compete to be the silliest costumed flyer into our beautiful harbour! This year, the event has a range of fun and creative activities for all ages to join in, including a World Food Fair and Music Stage in Odlin's Plaza.

Held on Wellington Anniversary Day, and held in Wellington’s outdoor jewel, the Waterfront from Frank Kitts Park to Te Papa Promenade, when the weather is good this cannot be beaten for a free and fun family day out. The event starts at 11am with a kids’ jump from the sea-level platform by the lagoon entrance, and moves into the afternoon with the adult and corporate competition sections, with entrants jumping from a specially constructed platform on Taranaki St Wharf.

A World Food and Music stage and food court will be in Odlin's Plaza, with the German international touring "La Brass Banda" band at 1pm, brought to us in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, and Sam Manzanza and the Afro Beat Band at 3pm.

Frank Kitts Park hosts a wide variety of food and market stalls, plus the Summer Stage, with the fantastic big Julie Lamb Band and a range of guests throughout the day including Matt & Ree, Sophie Thompson, and Emma Davey.

Spread your wings and explore your creativity. You could land yourself a fantastic prize and be crowned Birdman Wellington Champion 2017. We are offering 5 x $50 prizes, for the best dressed! This includes the Birdkidz section. Participation is open to all, and judges are looking for fantastic costumes, dazzling showmanship and a big splash. Design a crazy flying costume and launch yourself off the specially-made “airstrip” on Taranaki St Wharf. Kidz jumping is at 11am; the open section jumping starts from 1pm; the BMX flip ramp will entertain all day, tides permitting (post-script - tides do not allow the BMX ramp this year, sorry). No pre-registration; just come along and talk to our staff. Keep your costume safe, please! Think about sharp or broken items, weight when wet, nothing around the neck; those sorts of sensible safety things! Our staff will help with that.

There will be a whole range of fun and family-friendly activities to provide an entertaining day for all ages, including excellent music stages, kids’ activities and rides, lots of food, and a range of market stalls.

The Birdman website, for more detailed information, is here; and the stall application is here.
